What is No Smoking Day?

         No Smoking Day is an annual health awareness campaign that helps smokers that want to stop.

         The first No Smoking Day was on Ash Wednesday in 1984 and it now takes place on the second Wednesday in March.

         Over one million people stopped smoking on No Smoking Day in 2008.

Why is it important?

         Most people know that smoking is really bad for your health.

         It increases the risk of getting lung cancer, other cancers, heart attack, stroke and chronic lung disease.

         It also stinks and costs a fortune.

Why quit?

         For better health. For example after 20 minutes your blood pressure and pulse return to normal, after 48 hours there is no nicotine left in the body and taste and smell greatly improve, and after one year the risk of heart attack is halved. 

         For more money. For example a 20 a day smoker will save more than £40 per week, £176 per month or £2111 per year!

         For safety. For example 65% of accidental deaths in the home in Wales in 2007/8  were caused by smoking materials and on average there are also 10 people injured a month as a result of a fire caused by smoking materials.

         For more energy.

         To prevent premature ageing.

         For whiter teeth.

         For lower stress levels.

         For an improved sense of taste and smell.

         For the sake of your family and friends.

No Smoking Day's top tips for successful quitting.

         Find a friend who is also going to stop smoking for support.

         Throw away ashtrays, lighters and cigarettes.

         Enrol in a free NHS stop smoking course.

         Avoid anyone who isn't supporting your attempt.

         Get out for a walk every time you feel tempted to smoke.

         Join a gym and enjoy a healthy new you.

         Fill the fridge with healthy, low calorie snacks like carrot sticks and celery so if you're tempted to eat rather than smoke you won't pile on the pounds.

         Save the money.
