Peer Education

Peer Education is education for young people by young people in order that they are better able to cope with issues that affect them. Peer education is delivered in a variety of ways including drama and role play. Peer support is different as this is one to one support.

Where does Peer Education happen?

Peer Education projects function in all senior schools and sixth form colleges in Wrexham.

Darland High School has a full time worker whilst in other schools the projects are supported by full time youth workers based at the relevant schools.

Significant developments include the North Wales Peer Education Practitioners Forum and subsequent links with young people across North Wales.

Another ongoing development is a pilot project for the new baccalaureate. Peer education is being used as a tool to enable peer educators to achieve key skills needed for the baccalaureate.

How do you become a peer educator?

Ask your youth worker at school. It’s as easy as that.

The training includes a programme of drug education followed by two days training that includes communication skills and planning and evaluation skills.

Darland High school are fortunate enough financial backing from a local charity, 'The Alyn Family Doctors', who fund a two week training programme for peer educators within the school. This has been supported by a weekend residential in mid Wales funded by the Local Health Board and the Police Community Fund.

The Core Group

This is a small group of young people who meet every week to plan, deliver and evaluate peer education to varied audiences including youth clubs, schools, colleges and conferences.
