School Councils
All schools in Wales must have a school council.
The Wrexham Secondary School Council Forum is made up of 2 young people from each secondary Schools Council who have been elected by their peer group.
The group meet about twice a term and are involved in a number of activities which aim to make school councils more effective. Recently the forum has been organising visits between schools councils across the county to share experiences and ideas. The group also hopes to become more involved in shaping decisions within the county that relate to school matters.
The Chief Officer for Learning and Achievement has agreed to visit the group on a regular basis to ensure that he keeps young people informed of any changes and of course to consult with them about future plans regarding schools. This group like so many others will have the opportunity to elect young people onto the proposed Youth Parliament.
Why have a School Council Forum?
This group was set up because young people wanted the different school councils to work more closely together. It will also run elections for the Funky Dragon School Council Representative. This representative is now elected from the forum and feeds information to and from Funky Dragon. All schools in Wales must have a school council and this group is playing an important role in helping schools develop them.
What happens Next?
In the future the forum will continue to meet with the Chief Officer to discuss school based issues and feedback information to him. The forum will also be involved in running sessions and training for teachers and young people on developing school councils.
