United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC)

The UNCRC is an international agreement that protects the human rights of children under the age of 18. It was ratified by the UN General Assembly in 1989.

On 16 December 1991, the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland agreed to make sure that every child in the UK has all the rights as listed in the Convention.

In 2004 the Welsh Assembly Government formally adopted the UNCRC and made it the basis of all our policy-making for children and young people.

Article 42 of the convention states that Government should make the convention known to all parents and children. In line with this article, a key objective of the Welsh Assembly Government is to increase awareness of the UNCRC.
